Overloading is the most common cause of load sensor failure, a loadcell is just like a spring in certain aspects, which will be damaged if overstretched or overloaded. A machanical stop(refer to below picture) can be used to protect the sensor from excessive deformation. The deformation distance can be determined by loading the sensor with rated capacity, then adjust the meachnical stop to reach the bottom of the transducer. In most cases, the load transducer will be used to measure load at 40-80% of the full scale, thus the deformation distance can be adjusted using reference load which is a bit higher than the maximum target load to be measured instead of the rated capacity.
